Abstract: The results of melt ponds topography, salinity and temperature measuring performed in the July-September 2005 R/V “Akademik Fedorov” cruise to the North Pole are presented. The 1-D conceptual model of the melt pond freezing has been formulated on the basis of field observations. The model with three unknown moving boundaries is based on the classical Stefan problem and takes into consideration the accumulation of salt in the meltwater due to ice growth. The meltwater layer is never solidificated completely due to increasing salinity and thus represents a qualitative element of the system. The difference between the growing of sea ice without and with melt ponds can reach several tens centimeters depending on meltwater salinity and depth. The process of melt ponds freezing is supposed to be an important factor of multiyear sea ice bottom roughness.
