Abstract: A field test was performed on board PLH Soya, an icebreaking patrol vessel of Japan Coast Guard (JCG), in the southern Sea of Okhotsk in February 2005. The objective of the test was to measure the local ice load acting on the hull. A detailed observation of ice conditions including the measurements of ice thickness by way of electrical-magnetic inductive sensor and ice concentration by VTR imaging was also made. This paper presents the results of the measurements. The data showed a good correlation of the ice load with the ice thickness. It was also shown that the fore shoulder area received the higher ice load that other areas of the hull.
