Abstract: When an ice sheet adfreezes to pile structures, vertical ice forces act on the structures as the water level changes due to tides, floods, and so on. However when the change in water level reaches a certain value, the ice sheet fractures. The modes of ice failure can be basically classified as bending failure and adfreeze bond failure. Bending failure can be subdivided into two types of cracking: radial and circumferential. Vertical ice forces corresponding to each mode of ice failure must be estimated theoretically. Therefore, it’s important to predict the mode of ice failure. In this study, we developed theoretical equations to estimate the vertical ice forces, which correspond to each mode of ice failure, and verified the equations through field experiments. We confirm that this method of the estimation will contribute to design pile structures in cold regions.
