Abstract: In cold regions, such as Japan's Hokkaido Island, rivers and lakes often freeze up in the winter season. Consequently, frazil ice accretions often clog riverside water intakes. To counter this problem, Kubit (2000) suggested that ice-skimming booms be used to block the flow of frazil ice into such intakes. The purpose of this study was to increase the efficiency of this approach. Four types of Frazil Ice Control Systems (FICS) were tested to compare their effectiveness. Bent-type and variant-type FICS both performed well in comparison with a straight type. However, the most effective system for controlling frazil ice was a variant-bent type, which had characteristics of both the bent-type and variant-type configurations.
