Abstract: We present a numerical model based on the finite volume method to simulate sea ice growth and desalination as a flow process through a porous medium with phase change. To achieve this we estimate a permeability-porosity relationship for the initial stages of sea ice growth from experimental data for brine drainage. The model generates ice sheets with salinity profiles close to calculations based on ice growth velocity.
