Abstract: This paper overviews common ice problems encountered at U. S. Army Corps of Engineers locks and describes current solutions. In spite of major advances in ice control methods during the last several decades, a number of the most serious ice problems still lack practical solutions at many of the projects, such as passing brash ice that accumulates in the upper lock approach and removing ice from and lock walls and gate recesses. Research directions and possible strategies for addressing these problems are discussed.
