Abstract: This paper presents hydrological analysis of the snowmelt runoff related to the Shokotsu River ice jam in March 1995. The actual contribution of snowmelt to the basin response was inversely calculated from the observed discharges at several gauging stations and compared with the snowmelt detennined from heat budget analysis. Since only daily discharges were observed at most of gauging stations, hourly runoff hydrographs need to be determined for the ice jam analysis. In this study, hourly runoff hydrographs were obtained using a two-step storage function model based on inversely calculated effective snowmelt and observed rainfall with optimized model parameters.
