Abstract: In cold regions, ice sheets have been used for many purposes such as recreation (fishing, parasailing, snowmobiling, etc. ), and road and railway traffic. However, a number of accidents on ice sheets have been reported, so it is important to clarify the sheets' bearing capacity. In addition, in snowy areas such as Hokkaido, Japan, ice sheets readily experience flooding phenomenon due to snow accumulation. To clarify the bearing capacity of ice sheets in flooding condition, in-situ experiment were conducted at Lake Oketo in 1996 and Lake Abashiri in 1997, in Hokkaido. The authors obtained theoretical solutions of bearing capacity under the flooding condition and compared them with the test results.
