Abstract: Platelet ice has been observed frequently in McMurdo Sound, Antarctica, where it is closely associated with algal communities. The abundance of platelet ice in the Sound is usually linked to its proximity to the Ross Ice Shelf. At present there are several conflicting theories of platelet ice growth. Published and unpublished field observations are compared with the predictions of these theories.
