Abstract: In the cold regions, there are many factors which may have influence on ice formation in those upper reservoirs of pumped storage power stations, the main ones include: temperature, wind direction, wind speed, reservoir temperature, flow regime and operation control of unit, etc. Except for the operation control of unit, the other natural factors can not be controlled artificially for a particular station. But the ice damage will be mitigable significantly in case of proper operation controL This paper describes the basic relationship between the unit operation and the ice formation in an upper reservoir based on the winter operation of Shisanling Pumped Storage Power Station and the observed results of ice situation in 1995 1996 and 1996 - 1997.
