Abstract: The prediction of the response of a sea ice sheet to the forcing of an ocean wave field has two components. First the strain (or stress) field induced in the sea ice due to the propagation of the wave must be calculated. Second we must assess the response of this sea ice to this strain distribution, noting that the material properties of the sea ice may be modified by past stress distributions. This information is based on the empirical modelling of low cycle fatigue experiments. In this paper we review the progress of work that has been conducted in Antarctica and in the laboratory to understand the wave-induced break-up of a homogeneous sea ice sheet of approximately uniform thickness.
