Abstract: A series of field experiments has been performed in MCMurdo Sound, Antarctica on snowfree first year, columnar, sea ice of approximately uniform thickness. The measurements have all involved the constant load amplitude flexing of cantilever beams of sea ice, with zero mean stress. The data from three field seasons on this very simplest type of sea ice sheet is compiled. In this way the fatigue behaviour of sea ice is extrapolated beyond the measured regime, specifically accounting for the brine fraction which is a parameter of critical importance in sea ice studies.
