Abstract: A geographical information system has been developed to maintain a record and to analyze the river ice cover upstream of the Safe Harbor Hydroelectric Facility on the lower portion ofthe Susquehanna River. This facility has been repeatedly adversely affected by river ice cover break-up and has developed a substantial informational data base on the upstream river ice cover. The purpose of this project is to develop a system that will store historical information, provide a means to record future information and make all the information readily accessible for analysis and report preparation. Historically river ice cover information has been recorded on preprinted sheets which, are archived. These sheets tend to be inefficient since available information is difficult and time consuming to extract. The developed system provides easy access to information, resulting in an efficient means ofcollection, storage, display and analysis ofvaluable information related to river ice cover management.
