Abstract: The songhuajiang river basin located in the northeast of China, there are 4-6 freeze months each year for rivers and lakes. The water quality extremely worsened in above period because of water covered by ice of 0.5-2.0 m deep. The investigations and assessments of water quality in ice-covered river indicate that the under-ice dissolved oxygen (DO) is the lowest in this period. The reason is greatly reduce ofreaeration capacity of water body, sometimes it can go zero due to cover ice. DO level is going down day by day from ice-cover start, the lowest level of DO occurred in the day before unfreeze. The life conditions of fishes became in great deterioration because of lower DO level. A lot of death fishes has been found in the river reaches in which have many pollutant influent.
