Abstract: A dynamic-thermodynamic model with three levels: level ice, rubble and open water, was coupled with Blumberg-Mellor Ocean Model in order to improve the sea ice forecast for the Bohai Sea. The ocean model is a 3-dimentional, primitive equation, sigma coordination, free surface, estuarine and coastal ocean circulation model with an imbedded turbulence closure submodel which can yield realistic surface Ekman layer for coupling with ice model. The ocean model can present physical phenomena of 1-IOOkm length and tidal-monthly time scales, and is good for the simulation of the coastal circulation and tides in the Bohai Sea. The ice drift, growth and decay in the Bohai sea are simulated by the coupled ice-sea model. The sensitivity of the model to parameters are presented and the tidal open boundary condition is discussed. The sea ice forecast experiments for the Bohai Sea were performed by using the coupled model in the winter of 1996/1997 and satisfactory results were obtained.
