Abstract: During the German-Russian Expedition (ARK XI/I) from July - September 1995 in the Laptev Sea on board RV POLARSTERN the surface and subsurface topography of 14 first-year pressure ice ridges was investigated with the aid of laser levelling and sonar devices. The main objective of the study was the detennination of characteristic geometrical parameters sail height, sail width, sail angles, keel depth, keel width and keel angles. From the investigated ridges 56 cross surface profiles and 296 subsurface profiles were evaluated with respect to the variability of the ridge keels. Significant geometrical parameters were determined in order to establish statistical relationships. The bulkiness of the ridge keel can be approximately estimated from the ridge sail topography, which can be relatively quickly detennined using suitable laser levelling devices.
