Abstract: The fate of oil spreading in cold waters is of concern for minimizing the impact of an oil spill. An ice modelling facility has been modified to investigate the fate of oil under a variety of environmental conditions. The facility can produce different types of marine conditions including still water, waves, broken ice, and wave-agitated ice fields. This paper describes the facility, and presents the results of a few tests of oil spilled under different environmental conditions. The tests indicated that the spreading rate was not a strong function of the oil type for two types of crude oil. Wave action tended to break apart the oil into small slicks, whereas a broken ice field was found to be very effective in constraining the oil.
