Abstract: Spreading behaviour of oil under an ice cover is studied. Laboratory experiment was performed at an ice model basin to simulate the problem. Theoretical treatment of the problem was also made. Theoretical solutions are obtained by modifying a theory by Yapa so that they include effects of interfacial tension on the spreading behaviour of oil slick as well as gravity and viscous force. The new theory well explains the results of the present and past experiments. The theory gives a non-dimensional parameter governing the spreading behaviour of spilled oil under an ice cover.
