Abstract: Recent years have seen many design studies on offshore structures for Arctic gas and oil development. The designers consider many geometry options and it is generally believed that among the most promising types are wide platforms with sloping walls. This paper presents a method for predicting icc loads on wide platforms with sloping walls. This method does not require any additional assumptions and is based on results from systematic model tests performed at the Ice Model Basin of the Krylov Institute and on the outcome of theoretical research. The method enables to estimate geometry of the rubble pile depending on physical and mechanical properties of the ice in it and makes it possible to consider the effects of the submerged portion of the pile. The paper also shows some plots intended to facilitate calculations during early design stages.
