Abstract: A number of theories have been proposed for estimating the pressure that an ice sheet can exert with a change in temperature (Rose, the Russian SN 76-66 code, Drouin and Michel, Xu Bomeng, Fransson, Bergdahl and Cox). To date, however, there has not been any verification of these theories, primarily due to a lack of good experimental data. Recently, however, a test program was carried out to measure thermally-induced pressures on hydro-electric dams. This experimental program has produced a number of well-documented thermally-induced ice loading events. In this paper, the measured ice load for each event is compared to the predicted load for the event, based on a number of available theories. The comparison shows that none of the theories is adequate for predicting the thermally-induced loads on wide structures.
