Abstract: This paper addresses problems involved in the evaluation of global ice loads on wide offshore structures. Results of several laboratory test series are used to show that the global ice load on a wide offshore structure increases with the compliance of the structure. The data also shows that the ice load increases slightly with the rate of indentation provided that the ice failure mode is either simultaneous or nonsimultaneous crushing with flaking. A significant drop in the peak forces is likely to occur if the failure mode changes from simultaneous into nonsimultaneous.
