Abstract: In 1970 the hydraulic project Wloclawek on the Lower Vistula has been completed and put into operation. It has been designed as the first hydraulic project of the Lower Vistula Cascade. Unfortunately it remained till today as a single project with all consequences of such operation. Lower Vistula (391 km) is the part of Vistula (1041 km) which discharges directly to the sea. This section of the river has been always prone to the development of ice jams in the beginning of winter and later in spring. Construction of the dam formed water reservoir 50 km long and of the total volume 400 mIn. m3. Formation of the reservoir created new ice conditions. In the beginning of winter 1982 due to extreme hydrological and meteorological conditions severe flood occurred on the reservoir. The paper presents experience from the winter exploitation of the reservoir, dam and spillway.
