Abstract: Ice-sluicing is an important engineering measure to prevent ice damage and to guarantee the safety of winter-time operation of Xinjiang's diversion canal type hydro-electric power stations. In recent years, systematic experimental studies have been carried out to test various designs of ice-sluicing structure layout in the forebay of these power stations. Based on results collected from these experiments, critical conditions for ice-sluicing have been established, and layout design have been optimized to achieve the maximum value of the ice-water ratio K, a non-dimensional parameter representing the efficiency of an ice-sluicing structure. Results published in this paper can be used as a referential guideline for engineers in future design of such ice-sluicing structures in this type of stations.
