Abstract: In history, ice flood hazard happened frequently in the Yellow River. Before the 50s, the embankment of the Lower Yellow River breached twice every 5 years. In 1951 and 1954, the embankments were breached due to serious ice dams. Since the founding of the People's Republic of China, various engineering works have been constructed for ice flood prevention. The monitoring and reserches of ice flood have been enhanced. Owing to the construction of cascade reservoirs in the master stem of the Yellow River, conditions of hydraulic and thermodynamics have been changed, so has the ice regime. With the implementation of various engineering works and the study of the ice regime, ice flood prevention measures have been improved. Ice flood hazard is thus reduced greatly. Especially in the Lower Yellow River, the embankment has not been breached for 40 years cosectively during ice flood. This paper introduces the characteristics of ice regime, ice flood hazard, ice flood prevention measures and major acruvements in ice flood researches in the Yellow River. It is intend to provide some evidences for whom it may concern the ice flood in the Yellow River.
