Abstract: The characteristics of ice flood routing differ from those of the summer flood. Ice flood routing is very complicated in the Lower Yellow River due to the influences of sedimentation and river course shifting. At present, hydraulic method is often used in ice flood model. That is to solve St. Venant equations numerically. This method is clear in concept and rigorous in calculation. However, to seek reasonable results for the Lower Yellow River requires reliable roughness data and a lot of cross sectional measurements. These are not available yet. This study tried the hydrological method with real time calibration. To simplify the computation, average modification coefficient of each station is used. A correlation between water stage and discharge is established thus to calculate water stage. Real time modification coefficient is introduced into tlus correlation. Average modification coefficient method and water recession approach are used in discharge computation. Modification coefficient is adjusted considering the influences of ice jam and ice dam Computed results are examined by actual measurements after 1970. The accuracy is fairly high.
