Abstract: Since the Liujiaxia Reservoir was put into operation in 1986, the adverse ice conditions in the Inner Mongolia section of the Yellow River have been greatly alleviated. However, serious ice flooding has continued to occur in some years because the reservoir is not very sensitive to ice flood changes in relatively long river course from the Inner Mongolia section, and because variations in flow discharge are beyond control. The Haibowan Reservoir, in its first stages of planning, is located at the fonjunction of Ningxia-Inner Mongolia autonomous regions. In principle the serious ice flooding in Inner Mongolia section can be effectively eliminated by appropriate dispatching from the Haibowan Reservoir Hows and by improving the dyke protection.
