Abstract: A serious ice jam took place at Bayangaole in the winter of 1993 on the Inner Mongolia reach of the Yellow River. The water level in the freeze- up period broke the historical record, leading to the breach of river embankment and causing an ice flood disaster. This paper analyses the causes of ice hazard formation comparing with historical ice regime. Prevention measures including engineering and non-engineering aspects are presented for preventing ice hazards on the reach.
