Abstract: During winter time the cold air causes a huge frazil production in a river. For the power plants in the Norwegian rivers the intake-racks are very susceptible to blockage due to deposition of this frazil ice on the bars of the racks. The frazil sticks easy to the bars and reduces the inflowing discharge. Several power plant owners have done experimental work on avoiding this. Most of the work is focused on the reducing effect of an ice cover to the frazil production. It is anticipated a strong reducing effect, but no calculations have yet been done to quantify this.
