Abstract: During ice-free and ice-covered period, water temperature variations were measured in a small stream, and also meteorological data such as air temperature, wind velocity, solar radiation, etc., were monitored. Thermometers has a resolution of 0.02 C, and these data were sampled every 10 minutes. The development of ice cover in the upstream of the ice fence, which was constructed to halt flowing slush ice and accelerate the formation of ice cover, was also observed. From these measurements, various phenomena related to the water temperature change were clarified. Supercooling of water was observed, and the period of supercooling was compared the length of ice covered reach. The development of ice cover suppress the occurrence of supercooling. Thus it is concluded that the cover is a good protection of water against the cold air temperature and its formation is effective for the suppression of frazil ice production.
