Abstract: Though not a big one, the Baltic Sea is much differentiated in respect to ice conditions in its particular basins. These conditions are particularly capricious in the Polish coastal waters - at the southern coast of the Baltic Sea. Two types of water areas can be distinguished there: shallow bays and lagoons, where the sea ice is observed nearly each winter and the open sea coast, where the ice is of less common appearance. A series of iceless winters during 1987/88 to 1992/93 in this region gave an attempt to investigations on whether it is the effect of the global warming or the periodicity of cool and mild winters. It is to be mentioned that similar series of iceless winters occurred in the nineteen thirties, too.
