Abstract: Observations and measurements of atmospheric icing on a radio and TV mast in northern Sweden have been carried out 1988-1993. The results were compared to predicted values, mainly based on a procedure presented by Makkonen and Ahti (1993). General meteorological data from a weather station were used for the analysis. The results showed that the largest and heaviest accretions on structures in the inland of northern Sweden were caused by in-cloud icing. Furthermore, it was found that ice loads caused by freezing precipitation and wet snow were very small; the additional weight on tall structures due to these factors may be neglected. There was good agreement in time between observed icing events forecast. Predicted loads were lower than those measured in most cases. The result also indicated that the de-icing of a structure may be considered to be an instantaneous event.
