Abstract: Dislocation/grain boundary (GB) Interactions have been studied In ice polycrystals during creep using in situ synchrotron X-ray topography. A GB acts as a strong obstacle to dislocation motion. Dislocations pile up against a GB upon loading and pile-up relaxation occurs after unloading and annealing. The observations clearly revealed non-basal dislocation/GB interactions. However, they neither noticeably Increase stress concentrations nor contribute significantly to the overall plastic deformation. In addition, dislocation transmission through a GB was observed under special geometrical conditions. The generality and implications of these observations are discussed.
