Abstract: Operation of the hydropower units is adversely affected by ice that is transported into the upper Niagara River from Lake Erie. Ice stoppages and ice jams can occur within the GlP with varying degrees of severity. Severe ice jams can cause significant loss of power generation and lead to flooding of shoreline property upstream of the GIP. Crissman et al. (1994) describe a comprehensive program to study the ice jamming processes in the upper Niagara River and to develop recommendations for reducing the frequency and severity of ice jamming. This paper provides details of a large physical model designed, constructed, and calibrated to aid in the understanding of the ice transport and accumulation mechanisms in the GIP.
