Abstract: A test structure with multiple narrow vertical load panels was used in a series of indentation tests on an ice cover. Nonsimultaneous ice failure at the contact with the structure was indicated from well synchronized load measurements and video recordings. The typical individual fracture length was smaller than the ice depth (300 film). A linear leastic FEM analysis focused on the stress field in front of the indentor is given. A model based on axial splitting is presented where the effective ice pressure is predicted to falloff with increasing structure width, if the ice conditions are maintained constant. The dependence of effective ice pressure on structure width and ice thickness with is presented.
