Abstract: Study was made on the effect of hull form characteristics and principal dimensions ratios on the ice propulsion and seaworthiness of icebreakers and transport ships of arctic navigation. Criteria of the comparative evaluation of the ice propulsion of ships were considered. Developed and tested in ice and hydrodynamic basins were series of models with systematically changed parameters of the hull form. The analysis was made of the influence of these parameters on icebreaking capability and propulsion of ships in calm water and in the seas. On the basis of works performed recommendations on the choice of rational hull form and principal dimensions ratios for promising icebreakers were formulated.
