Abstract: Anchor ice can develop in the river when the turbulent river water is supercooled to the bottom. The growth of anchor ice can be due to the attachment of frazil on the bottom roughness elements as well as the heat transfer between the supercooled water and the channel bed. A theoretical analysis on the process of anchor ice growth due to frazil accretion is developed. The analysis shows the importance of vertical mixing, frazil size distribution, as well as the geometry and distribution of roughness elements on the bed.
