Abstract: In February 1990, bow area ice-breaking pattern was observed using a Japanese patrol icebreaker "Soya". This was made at the pack ice zone in the north-east of Hokkaido. Model experiments were also made. The ship model with simplified wedge shape bow was made of acrylic resin to ease the observation of the bow area ice breaking pattern. The broken cusp shape was accurately measured with a personal computer. The mechanism of ice breaking due to ships is considered with the comparison between the fullscale and model measurements.
