Abstract: The existence of a layer of snow on top of uniform level ice creates problems in interpreting ship performance. Traditionally "thin" snow cover (20-30 cm thick) has not been a major problem but thicker snow layers have a much more significant effect on resistance and create difficulty in interpretation. The effect of snow cover varies depending on the hull form used and few systematic studies exist. This paper deals with both the basic properties of snow, with and without load, and practical comparisons of calculations and full scale ship results.
