Abstract: A small advanced ice-breaking cruise ship was developed by NKK. Since January 1991 the ship has been put into service at Abashiri, the biggest sea port in northeast of Hokkaido Island facing the Okhotsk Sea. The ship was required to have a good ice-going performance for winter drift-ice season and at the same time a high-speed and comfortable cruising quality for summer season. An extensive study was made for developing hull form and appendage designs to fulfil the above c onflicting requirements. Model tests including resistance tests and self-propulsion tests in level ice, drift pack ice, broken ice and in open water were conducted. Resistance tests in ridge were also c onducted. The final hull form had several distinct features including a cylindrical bow, a chined mid body section with outwardly fitted bilge keels, and ice deflecting fins in front of the propeller. From the model test results, full-scale ship performance was estimated and the above design features were confirmed to work effectively as intended.
