Abstract: The analysis shows that nearly half of all damages to ships are caused by the fact the ships find themselves in ice conditions more complicated than those for which they were designed. A necessity arises to substantiate and practically utilize the safe periods and technology of ice navigation of ships. A well-founded solution can be obtained by means of a combined analysis of ships' ice-going qualities and ice conditions of navigation (taking into consideration their dynamics) and by introducing appropriate limitations. The efficiency of operation of merchant ships in ice conditions should be determined on the basis of maximum profit to be gained by the ships not only from ice navigation but also due to a better use of the period of open water. This paper describes a model of ice navigation which meets these requirements.
