Abstract: To study the distribution and location of the ice resistance around an icebreaker hull, a series of ice resistance tests on a segmented icebreaker model were carried out in June 1989 at the Wan: siHi Arctic Research Centre (WARC), today Masa-Yards Arctic Research Centre (MARC). In tests, carried out as towed resistance tests in level ice of two thicknesses, five segments were separated from the hull of the model. For each segment, the resistance force, i. e. the force opposing the motion, was measured simultaneously with the resistance, measured for the whole model in the conventional way. In addition, the vertical and transverse forces were simultaneously measured for the segments, too. This paper describes the test series and the test arrangements, and gives the numerical test results.
