Abstract: A mathematical model is developed for simulating sediment transport and bed changes in the lower Yellow River during the winter. The empirical sediment transport formula commonly used for open water conditions is modified for ice covered conditions based on field data. In the simulation model, temporal and spatial changes of flow, sediment transport rate, and channel bed profile are calculated at successive time steps and cross sections. Changes in channel width are calculated based on the minimum stream power concept. The distribution of erosion and deposition at a cross-section is determined by the effective tractive force criterion. The simulation results compared favorably with field observations.
