Abstract: The Upper Niagara River Hydraulic Routing Model has been developed as a tool for forecasting flows for hydropower operations on the upper Niagara River. It has been designed to reduce uncertainties in flow forecasts that occur due to irregular, temporal, and spatial changes in flow resistance caused by ice and weeds. The model has several components, including: (a) a steady flow model, (b) an unsteady flow model, (c) a linear time-varying system model for an inflow-outflow relation, (d) a nonlinear, stochastic timevarying model of a stage-discharge relation, and (e) a Kalman filtering model.
