Abstract: This article presents a numerical ice generation and buildup model that is now the principal tool used by our Consulting Group for the analysis of winter hydraulic conditions for both present and future hydroelectric projects. We thus begin this paper with an overview of our undersanding of the physical processes that govern the phenomena of ice cover formation on a natural river. It is of course upon these ideas that the model is built. Practical applications in a variety of situations are then used to illustrate the model's capabilities.
