Abstract: The Jing-Mi Canal, from the Miyun Reservoir to Beijing City, is the major water conveyance channel in Beijing municipality. The Huairou Reservoir divides the canal into two reaches. The canal is 110 km in length and about 440 structures stand on it. With the development of Beijing City, the canal is becoming increasingly important for water supply through the whole year, which urgently needs reliable winter operation. During the winter operation of 1989-1990 an extensive field observation was made along the canal. Data of weather conditions, water temperatures, ice regimes and hydraulic parameters were collected. A numerical hydro-thermodynamic model was successfully used to simulate winter operation conditions. Some options ensuring safe winter operation of the canal were recommended from the observation and numerical simulation.
