Abstract: A low level river crossing for road traffic has been suggested as a possibility to be considered as a replacement for some ferry crossings in Saskatchewan. The crossing would consist of a low height earth fill with many culverts. Most of the time the river flow would pass through the culverts, but during high flow, the discharge would pass over the top of the crossing as well. The idea behind the low level crossing is that it would give better service than a ferry, but would be much less expensive than a bridge. The site selected as a test case for the study was near Paynton Ferry on the North Saskatchewan River, 56 km north-west of North Battleford. A particular concern about the feasibility of the proposal was the potential for ice jamming during spring breakup. A model test was carried out to investigate the hydraulic perfonnance of the structure under conditions of combined through flow and overflow, and under ice conditions during spring breakup.
