Abstract: The concept of using a conical structure in ice covered waters has been considered for oil and gas production. The forces on a conical structure are considered to be less than that for ice crushing against a vertical-sided structure. An ice floe moving against a cone will slide up and break in bending. Both the breaking force and ride up force on the cone must be considered. In this paper, a review of the existing theories will be given, and a new theory is presented which includes either simultaneous or sequential breaking forces and the ride up forces. An example is given which shows the significance of the variables. The comparison with other theories and model test data will be presented in another paper.
