Abstract: The purpose of the presentation is to briefly review a some of the mechanical models of a sliding crack, with secondary ("wing") cracks growing from its tips. Such configurations have been observed in ice and other geomaterials under compressive conditions. The drawbacks and limitations of the existing models are discussed; for example, some of them produce wrong results in the limits of very short and very long wings. A new model, that has correct asymtotic behaviour in these limits is proposed.
