Abstract: We report preliminary results on the measurements of the fracture toughness of the basal and prismatic planes in freshwater ice crystals. We have also made an attempt to measure the fracture toughness of a grain boundary in a bi-crystal, with the coaxes of the individual grains oriented normal to each other. Although specific toughness values are given, the aim of this communication is to discuss the problems associated with such measurements. In a separate investigation, the theoretical results of a previously derived interface crack deflection criterion are demonstrated by growing controlled cracks normal to the grain boundary of a freshwater ice bi-crystal. Furthermore, the analysis is successfully used to predict the stability of the crack trajectory for growth along the basal and prismatic planes.
