Abstract: The title of this paper suggests that the section for Ice Research and Engineering of IAHR is celebrating its 20th birthday. In actuality the section was established 31 years ago, while this year marks 20 years of separate ice symposia. Both birthdays are something that ice researchers and engineers can be proud of. It's appropriate, therefore, to discuss the early years of our section before the symposium years.
